The poem illustrates the princess' beautiful fairy tale castle how ever item in her palace is very vivid and filled with life. On the other hand , the princess is lifeless and spiritless, she longs for her freedom and happiness. Her view of her palace is the opposite of how it's being described , she compares it to a prison . The mood of the princess affected the reader's attitude towards the poem because her depressing mood brought the happiness from the bringing of the poem to a dramatic fall .
Literary Devices
An allusion used within this poems are allusion , simile , and hyperbole. A hyperbole is an exaggerated statement not literally taken. The example i found in this poem is " And with his kiss to touch your lips to flame" the kiss bestowed upon her lips were exaggerated because the kiss didn't really leave flames on her lips . The kiss was passionate and strong like the flames from a fire. The next example of a literary device is an allusion , "pearls of Ormuz , rich beyond surmise ?" because they give the picture of the pearls of Ormuz being as expensive and valuable . Last but not least " The swans that drift like snow across the lake"is an example of a simile because there is a comparison of the swans movement to the movement of the snow on the lake . Let's not forget this last device , the example found in the poem is a metaphor . "Why from her lips are song and laughter dying " this statement compares her lips to a crying sad song . Her lips are probably drooping or sad , frowning .
