This poem is broken down into years , within these years a transaction of events occur. The bells must signify something, such as freedom or noise . In the first stanza the author or whom ever is speaking is focusing on getting someone's attention . In the second stanza the poem has details about a church or wedding , and when bells are included in such an atmosphere then it suggest a celebration . Then in the third stanza Edgar Alan Poe describes terror and despair , the bells in this case signify awareness among the people. Literary devices :
The literary devices used among this poem are assonance, anthropomorphism and onomatopoeia. Assonance :
In poetry, the repetition of the sound of a vowel or diphthong in non rhyming stressed syllables. The literary device was used in the lines "Hear the mellow wedding bells" is assonance . The second literary device I found in this poem is Onomatopoeia . The words jangling , wrangling , clang and clash are all forms of onomatopoeia . They are all good examples of this device because they are words that express sound(s). The last but not least literary device is anthropomorphism, the attribution of human characteristics to a god , animal or object. The examples shown in this poem of anthropomorphism is "dove that listens " this is an example because a dove can't listen so it's giving human traits to the dove . The second example of this literary device is "to the moaning and the groaning of the bells" this is an example because the bells are given the characteristics of a human , the groaning and moaning .
